When Goddess Parvati became the mother of Lord Skanda (also known as Lord Kartikeya), she became known as Goddess Skandamata. This is the significance of Day 5 of Navaratri. Goddess Skandamata mounts on lion and carries baby Murugan ( another name of Kartikeya) in her lap. Depicted with four hands carrying lotus flowers in her upper two hands, she sits on lotus flower and is also known as Goddess Padmasana. Hibiscus is her favourite flower and the colour of the day is orange.
