This story was narrated to me by a retired, respectable judge. In his court many years back, a man in his mid fifties was presented as accused for being a drunk and abused the surroundings. He was dressed in dhoti and a kurta, soiled by dirth, his glasses were cracked, there are some bruises on his forehead and arms. However the acussed was very silent and humbly stood with folded hands. He was fined Rs. 50 by the court for being drunk and urinating on the road, where he fell down unconsciousy and rolled over to a drain.
The accused readily accepted the sentence and then asked the judge whether he would get a receipt for the fine.
The judge was a bit taken aback and said,” Ofcourse. But why do you need the receipt ? “
The accused unpretentiously said, ” I want to show the receipt to my wife. She would understand that I did not spend all the money on alcohol. Some of it was spent elsewhere.”
